Our city, Újbuda

Water, mountains, valley – all the natrual beauties one can imagine are to be found in the area surrounded by the river Danube and slopes of the hills of Buda. This is what Újbuda, the so-called western gate of the capital, can provide its visitors and residents with. The legend of Gellért Hill, the Citadell, the world famous Gellért Hotel and Spa, the Feneketlen (Bottomless) Lake, the Technical University and the Lágymányosi Bay all add to the atmosphere one can experience in Újbuda.

The district boasts with four of the nine bridges connecting the Pest and Buda side of the city, one of which is Lágymányosi Bridge, the most modern bridge of Budapest. The 494,8 m bridge, which connects Újbuda with the sourthern part of Pest, was meant to be built for the Austrian-Hungarian world fair. Even though the fair was called off eventually, the newest bridge of Budapest was opened for the traffic on 23 October 1995. Újbuda thus obtained a new bridge and at its foot a modern university campus and business area as well.

There used to be a lake in the area between Petőfi and Lágymányosi bridge as a result of the regulations of the Danube, at the end of the 19th century. The only place that still preserves the memory and atmosphere of that is the bay next to Kopaszi dike to the south of the railway embankment.

The most important of Újbuda’s mineral and thermal spring are those that stem at the foot of Gellért hill. These were known as far back in history as the Árpád era. According the legend, St. Elizabeth, the daughter of the Hungarian King, Andrew II, lead a medical institution here during her fight against the plague. Later on the mineral water found here was used to cure eight different deseases.
